Plastic carports are not only a good alternative to a garage, but they can be a temporary shelter or function as a Pavilion for summer outings and picnics. There are many types of carports to choose from such as aluminum, wood or concrete. However, plastic carport kits seem to be the most portable since they are easy to assemble and strike.

These carports are often better known as canvas or vinyl carports. They are generally made of polyethylene or polyester materials that stretch across the arched top known as the canopy. A rigid structure containing plastic or metal poles that are anchored by various means create the skeleton of the vinyl carport.

Plastic shelters can be as simple as a structure with a basic roof, which is merely a tarp stretched over a frame. However, they can also be quite sophisticated with zippered sides and canvas doors that open or close with the tug of a drawstring.

Some plastic shelters can be custom designed so that they are large enough to accommodate foot traffic around a parked vehicle. Many amateur auto mechanics enjoy the extra room to tinker around in. Carports are also used as actual airplane hangars or shades. Pilots in fair weather states enjoy them mostly because they are cheaper to rent than metal hangars are.

There are several companies that offer a plethora of designs for canopy carports. Some are more sophisticated and aesthetically appealing than others, but it is usually their portability and light weight that makes them so popular.

A plastic carport is a neat little invention, but it is not immune to damage from severe weather conditions and the effects of hot and cold temperatures. The canopy material does require some maintenance to prevent or slow the deterioration that can occur. Despite the assembly and maintenance issues, carports offer many purposes in addition to vehicle storage.
