Building or buying a carport for your home will increase the value of your property.  It will protect your vehicle from rain and sun damage and keep it clean from falling leaves and bird droppings.  However, there are several styles of carport roofing to consider.  The hip roof and flat roof carport are two of the most classic styles.

The hip roof carport is an elongated 4 sided pyramid.  It’s designed to allow water to flow from the top into channels.  The sloping roof prevents water from pooling on the top of the carport roof, thus protecting from the damage of standing water.  Hip roof carports are typically made of steel.  It has a clean and stylish look that will compliment any style of home.

Flat roof carports are a more economical choice and also a fun and easy project for the do-it-your-selfer due to its simple design.  It can be made of wood with a corrugated steel or laminate roof.  However, it is also possible to buy the flat roof carport in a kit made of galvanized steel.

When deciding which kind of roof best fits your home, it is important to keep a couple of considerations in mind.  If you live in an area that experiences a high annual rainfall, it might be wise to consider the hip roof style with its sloping roof and channels.  However, if you live in a drier area where sun damage is the main concern, a flat roof style will be equally as efficient and more economical.

If you are building a carport to prevent tree litter and bird droppings from hitting your vehicle, a sloped roof like the hip roof might be a better choice because it will be easier to clean.  However, you will have to keep in mind that the gutters will need to be cleaned and flushed on a regular basis, something that is not necessary with a flat roof.  In either case, installing a carport in your home will be a rewarding experience by bringing value to your home and protecting the value of your car.
