With many individuals wanting to add unique facets to their homes, there is a growing demand for carports. Broadly defined, a carport is a garage for one or more cars to park, usually consisting of a flattened roof supported by means of poles. The most common question when it comes to carports these days is “how do I build my own carport”. The growing demand for easy to build carports is continuously on the rise as more homeowners try to tackle such a project on their own.

Individuals who are looking to build a carport can actually stand to save a great deal of money by eliminating the cost of a professional installation. You will however, need to do a little investigating on the subject to make sure that you get the right type of kit. Kits come with all of the supplies you will need as well as step by step instructions for the carport assembly and installation process.

Many experts have found that many individuals who build their own carports say that the task was so simple that they were able to accomplish it in just a few hours. Additionally, a carport installation that consists of a prefabricated kit that is purchased directly from the factory tends to yield a sturdier and more durable shelter. As long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions fully, you should have no problems and be quite satisfied with the end result.

There are certain things you will need to consider when shopping for a wood, vinyl or metal carport design. The most important consideration is the size of the shelter. The length and width of the shelter should be consistent to that of the vehicle plus a few feet of walking space all around the vehicle. The height of the carport must, obviously, be higher than the height of the vehicle and of the person who has to walk under the carport to get in and out of the vehicle. Seven feet is generally considered a good height.

Next you will need to consider the slope of the roof. The slope fall should be at least 2”, with most plans coming in at about 4”. If you choose to use a PVC roof, then a steeper slope is advised (i.e., 6” or more).

Before you begin constructing the carport, make sure you complete all of the recommended site preparation. The best installation is one that is completed over a concrete patio or slab. If you need additional information regarding assembly or installation make sure you contact the manufacturer directly. The phrase “build my own carport” will no longer be a dream to you. You can then tell others about your experience so they too can save by handling their own carport installation.
