There are multiple types or varieties of carports available for purchase and installation. These kits are designed for quick and relatively easy installation by either the purchaser or a sub contractor. Whether or not you will be able to assemble your own carport kit will depend on a number of factors, including the material of that kit, the mode of assembly required, and the overall design of the structure.

One of the easier carports to assemble on one’s own is the single slope carport kit. The single slope in the title refers to the roof of said carport, implying that it is to be one solid sheath that slopes in one particular direction, facilitating installation by eliminating the complexity of a peaked or multi-sloped roof.

Single slope carports can come in several different types of materials. They can stand alone, or be attached to a pre-existing structure. With carport kits, they are more likely to be of the stand alone variety, since attaching a sloped roof to a pre-existing building, such as a home or garage, requires a certain degree of installation experience and basic architectural understanding.

Stand alone single slope carport kits generally include posts of metal that are intended to be secured into the ground or into a cement foundation, and to support the roof. These posts will be asymmetrical, to reflect the slope of the roof. It is extremely important that permanent or semi-permanent carports feature some degree of a slope or slant in their roofs, in order to effectively expel water, snow and debris, and to prevent build up that could weigh the entire structure down and cause permanent damage.

For single slope carports in areas where snow accumulates regularly, a highly effective roof material is metal or strong plastic that is corrugated. The corrugated nature of the material will further facilitate the removal of snow, and will ultimately extend the life of the metal carport.
