Carports

In choosing the right metal roof carport, you will have to make a few decisions about things such as the size, material, installation method, style, and price of the shelter.  Most of your choices should reflect or be a direct result of your specific shelter needs.  The size of a carport will definitely need to be consistent with the size of the vehicle you plan to shelter.  For example, if you are planning to shelter a full-sized SUV, your choice of carport will need to be large enough to adequately shelter the vehicle while also allowing for plenty of space so you can access the vehicle under the protection of the shelter.  You will also need to choose a carport height that allows for plenty of overhead clearance for the vehicle should you need to use the overhead rack for storage or transport.

Choosing the right metal material is going to be your second major decision.  You can choose from metal roof carports that are solely created from heavy duty steel materials or aluminum which is a less expensive material.  You can even choose a shelter that is made with a combination of both materials.  Many companies have begun combining both materials in the hope of creating shelters that are sturdy but still affordable to today’s consumers.  Such a shelter would still be sturdy under the duress of outdoor conditions but much more affordable because it utilizes aluminum materials in areas such as the roof or enclosure panels.  Metal carport roof panels do not have to be made solely with steel materials to be effective.  As long as the shelter contains a steel support system in the framing and support posts, it should fair very well for a very long time.

Next you will need to consider the style of the carport.  The first step here is deciding if you want a stand alone or attached installation method.  If have limited space in your yard adjacent to your home, you will definitely need to look for a lean to or attached shelter.  Such an installation will take up less yard space and your home will provide half of the support for the carport.  Some say that this type of installation is definitely more reliable.  On the other hand, a stand alone installation allows you to place the shelter anywhere you need it.  You can even place such a shelter in your backyard if needed or over a paved driveway so can continue to park your vehicle in the same place.

Most metal carport roofing materials are designed to last a long time especially in weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, hail, snow, and even moderate winds.  You will however, need to choose a style of roof that will work best for the climate or weather events in your area.  For example, a metal flat roof carport is not a good idea in an area that experiences excess or heavy rainfall or snowfall.  Such events will cause water and snow accumulation on the roof and in turn, the shelter will be placed under the strain of the heavier weight.  Metal flat roof carports do fair better in areas of high winds where the air can pass freely in and around the shelter.

Companies that sell metal roof carports are likely to carry a wide selection of sizes, materials, installation methods, and styles.  Prices are usually determined by the size and style of shelter that you choose.  Custom prices are higher but still quite feasible if you cannot find exactly what you need in a standard model carport.  When choosing a type of metal shelter, make sure you check with your local codes enforcement agency.  Some cities and states have specific building codes which you must follow even when installing something as simple as a carport.
