Carport Kits, Carports, Tips

Some homeowners never make the home improvements that give their home the finishing touches in meeting their needs because of a somewhat rational fear of the permitting process. Whether completing a home addition or adding metal carports, often times a building permit is required.

Metal carport building permits follow the same standard rules and requirements of any building permit. Whenever a homeowner does structural, electrical, plumbing or mechanical work, it is critical to check with the town zoning or development board to see what permitting, if any, is required. Carport permits will generally need some of the same basic requirements of any permit request.

The first step is to identify your zoning restrictions as part of the process of planning your carport installation. For some towns, you must be a minimum distance from the property boundary. In other areas, if a carport is within a certain distance of the actual home or in contact with the home, then there are fireproofing requirements regarding the materials. All in all, it is best to know the local building codes before putting in a request for a carport permit.

The second step is to develop your building plan. Many manufacturers provide permitting-ready building plans with their do-it-yourself carport kits. This leaves only drawing on your site plan the new location for your carport and filling out whatever writing application your zoning board or planning committee requires. Time can sometimes be a challenge in the permitting process. Many zoning boards meet fairly infrequently. You may have to wait up to a month in order to receive your approval.

There are also fees required, even for a metal carport building permit. Some municipalities charge only a nominal fee; say $25 for a permit application while others charge close to $100 even for a simple application. However, those fees are minimal compared to the thousands of dollars that can be the cost if you choose to ignore the permit requirement and go ahead with your project without it.

If you are concerned with the process or feel it may be more than you are willing to sign up to do, one advantage of using a contractor to erect your carport is that this professional will even handle the process of acquiring all of the necessary metal carport building permits. As part of ensuring proper building completion, any responsible contractor will include permit application as part of the overall project cost. With that worry off your shoulders, you can sit back and watch your new metal or aluminum carport take shape.
