Is a garage carport a garage or a carport? Well, as you may have guessed, it is a little of both. It is fully framed and, depending on the materials chosen, can look just like any other garage. One advantage is that it is modular or easily assembled and installed. You do not need an architect or a contractor! Another advantage is that many of them are portable which means if you move, you can take your carport garage with you. The advantage for both carports and garages is that they keep your car out of the weather including the rain, sun, hail, snow, ice and, yes, even protected from bird droppings and pine tree debris.
If you need a garage in a hurry, consider carport garages. If you just moved to a house with no garage or you just bought a new car, or if you are simply tired of getting in and out of a car that is exposed to the elements, you may only have to spend a fraction of the price and time it takes to build a conventional garage.
Carport materials range from steel, aluminum or wood to polyethylene/polyester. Steel shelters are the most durable but also the most expensive. They usually have an outside layer of galvanized steel with a zinc coating preventing corrosion and rust. Aluminum is naturally impervious to corrosion and rust.
Like garages, carports can be stand-alone or attached to your house. Depending on where you live, an awning type of carport might be sufficient if you are only looking for protection from the sunrays. However, if you live in the northeast, you need a carport garage of sturdier construction, one that is enclosed on at least three sides with a roof that can support to snow and ice buildup.
Standard garage carports can be very economical, but if you are willing to spend more money, there are some beautifully designed garage carports available that can add value to your home.
