Carports

Installing flat top carports can be as simple as erecting the structure with a basic steel or wood frame, or may require the assistance of a qualified contractor to extend the structure from the house.  A contractor may also be needed if the carport foundation needs to be prepared, and the integrity of the structure will be subject to harsh conditions.

A carport may fit into your home better than a gabled or colonial roof style, especially if you have a contemporary home.  Most of the benefits are the same but a carport will shade your vehicles from the sun and ward off the rain, while giving you and your passengers a place to stand while you exit the vehicle.

Flat roof carports can be made from a variety of material including wood, metal, and vinyl (for a temporary structure.)  A good, economical choice for your carport is aluminum or steel.  These metals are maintenance free and very durable. The most common finish is a baked enamel surface that doesn’t peel off or chip easily.  Flat carports will often have corrugated aluminum roofs to keep snow and water from accumulating, but if you aren’t using aluminum, it is important for a carport to have rain gutters and properly installed downspouts. Gutters will help keep the weight of water and melting snow off of the roof, and discourage pooling.

When installing a carport without a contractor, be sure to follow a few safety precautions.  Before placing foundation footings, know where the underground utilities are, and don’t place footings over them.  Once you have excavated, install steel reinforcements; these can be part of your kit, or purchased at an additional charge.  Always consult a professional before undertaking a complicated flat top carport installation.  Remember to also take into consideration the weather your flat carport will endure, and plan accordingly.
