Carports

Converting a carport to a garage is not as difficult as it may sound.  Having a converted carport addition to your house is not only convenient but may also up the value of your home as well.  A number of people have successfully created converted carport additions to their home, either using the converted carport as a garage or a bedroom.

There are a few steps to proper conversion of a shelter and the very first one is to know exactly what the building laws are in the place you live.  You may or may not need a permit; even if you do not need a permit there are likely laws that clearly spell out how the carport should be converted, how much insulation it should have, how the electricity should be installed, etc.  Knowing these laws before you start converting your carport will save the convert carport to garage cost dramatically as you will not have to redo work you have already done.

The first thing you will need to do is put in the cement flooring.  If your carport has a lower roof, you may want to dig up the ground a bit and then pour the cement in.  After that, you will need to put up a wooden framework on the inside of the carport; this is what will hold up the drywall.  You will want to put in electrical outlets and wiring right after putting up the wooden framework.  Once this is all done, you will need to add insulation if you want your converted shelter to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter, which is important if you are converting carport shelters into a bedroom or if the building codes in your area specify this as a necessity.  Next you will need to add the drywall and paint your new carport conversion.
