Converting a carport may not actually be as difficult as it sounds. Carport conversion is often done by homeowners seeking to turn their carport into a garage, office, or even a master bedroom. It does require a bit of work and investment of time and money but it can be done without too much hassle. The first thing you should do, however, is to check about whether converting a carport to a garage or a room will conform to building codes and thus be able to be insured. You will also want to check the area where you live to make sure that you do not need a permit for this.
The first step in carport conversions, whether it is a carport garage conversion or carport room conversion is that you need to lay down a smooth cement floor on the inside of the carport. You can either dig into the ground and then lay the cement or simply lay it on the ground as is, depending on how high your carport is. After this you will need to put up some wooden 2×4 boards as a framework to put the drywall on later. You will also need to put in electrical wiring, or have an electrician come in and do it for you. After you have the lights working you can put up the drywall and the insulation, then mud and paint the walls the color of your choice.
Something to keep in mind in all this is to make sure that the way you convert your carport is in accordance with the building laws, which in some cases are quite detailed. While it may be a bit time consuming to follow particular points as far as how much insulation your converted carport can have, for instance, it is worth it in the long run, especially if you want to be able to insure the new square footage you are adding to your home.
