Most consumers choose to purchase a metal carport awning because they are in need of an affordable and easy to install shelter.  You can utilize the shelter of metal carport awnings for the protection of a vehicle, outdoor equipment, or even as an outdoor entertainment and living space.  It is likely that you can use a shelter for more than one purpose depending on the size that you choose.   Metal carports and awnings come in many different sizes and styles that are sure to suit your particular needs.

There are two basic styles or types of metal carports, awnings, or canopies.  You can choose an attached shelter that must be installed and partially supported by your home.  This type of installation works well if you are looking to cover a patio or deck area.  You can use an attached shelter over a driveway or parking spot that is adjacent to your home.  The other option is a free standing shelter which can be installed over any area of your property.  Such a shelter can be installed in front, on the side, or behind your home.  Basically it can go anywhere a shelter is needed.

Metal awning carports come in many standard sizes but you can also choose to have one custom made to a specific size, shape, or installation method.  Some companies carry a retractable form of metal awning carport which works exceptionally well in areas where the shelter is only needed on a seasonal basis.  In the winter when heavy snow or ice is too excessive, you can easily retract the shelter to protect it.  Too much snow or ice can weight down the shelter and could lead to damage if it happens frequently.  A retractable awning is going to cost more to purchase but it should last longer if you are able to close it up during extreme weather or when it is not in use.

Most metal carport awnings have a canopy or soft top.  The soft top is usually made from a vinyl or canvas type of material.  It is important to choose a material that is durable and one that also protects the area below from the sun’s UV rays.  Harmful UV rays can cause damage to your vehicle’s surfaces or any other items you may be storing under the canopy.  Outdoor furniture will fade and the surfaces eventually deteriorate because they dry out or become brittle.  The extra protective materials will also likely last longer over the years as it is exposed to the elements so it is definitely wise to spend a little more money initially for a better cover material.  Replacing a canopy top is not difficult but it isn’t something you will want to do often.  It this is the case for your shelter, you may want to consider investing a little more money for a hard top or metal roof shelter which will last a long time with little or no maintenance.
