Carport Width

by Raymond Wallace

If you are building a carport yourself then it is very important that you get the carport dimensions down just right.  Even small errors can cost a lot of time and money to fix.  You should know the exact carport width and carport height before you start building or even purchasing the materials to build a carport.  If you are buying a prefabricated kit that you will install yourself you should also know the size very well to make sure you get something that is neither too small nor too large.

Carport sizes vary wildly – you can get a one vehicle carport or a carport that will cover several vehicles.  You can also get some high roof shelter that will cover an RV or even a boat.

Often times the carport size will be a determining factor in whether you need a building permit to put it up in the first place – yet another reason to make sure your dimensions have been measured accurately.  Knowing the building laws in your area before you build your carport is a wise move.  Something else you should keep in mind after you have measured the space you have and written down the dimensions is that, as you look at different carport measurements, the measurements given are those of the roof and not the ground measurements, the grounds measurements will be slightly smaller than the roof ones.

One thing you can do if you need your carport to be a certain width and height but you do not have a whole lot of space on your property is to put up a sloped carport.  This is a carport where the carport roof attaches to the roof of your house and then slopes down; it is more space efficient than a flat roof carport that is a stand alone structure.
