Carport size is a subjective matter; a consideration based on specific usage and personal preference.  Carport dimensions can be as varied as the individuals who own the vehicles in the carports.  Generally speaking, when it comes to carport sizes, though they vary, the standard lengths are usually around 12’, while most standard dimensions call for widths of approximately 24’.  This allows enough room for two standard size vehicles or one vehicle and additional storage and work space.

But carports do not merely “cover” vehicles; they also provide space to store vehicle accessories and the tools used to maintain the vehicle.  With this in mind, a 12’ x 24 x 10’ carport would not be able to effectively accommodate a recreational vehicle.  To begin with, carport lengths for recreational vehicles can go to 40’ or more depending on the style of recreational vehicle.  In fact, many dimensions for recreational vehicles call for minimum carport widths of 18’ to 24’.  And height is just as important a consideration.

If a pick-up truck is to be kept in the carport, the owner will need to consider how much “clearance” the carport should have in order to accommodate, not only the cab, but any additional accessories such as aftermarket lights and racks that would be mounted on the truck, as well as whether the truck sports oversized tires – all of which can raise the height requirements of the carport significantly.  In the case of a recreational vehicle, topside storage along with an air conditioning unit mounted to the top of the vehicle will also make a big difference in the dimensions of a carport.

Finally, the size of a carport is extremely important when considering the type of activity that will occur in the carport, from regular maintenance and storage to having enough room for friends who may drop by to admire the vehicle.
