Carports, Tips

Even though carports are intended to withstand long term exposure to outdoor elements, any outdoor building can still suffer damage during a severe storm or begin to show age after a while.  Carports can usually be repaired or upgrade fairly easy and inexpensively so you can continue to use year for many more years to come.  Typical carport repair project can include a simple paint job, replacing a sheet of roofing material, resurfacing an area that contains rust, and even adding siding to enclose the shelter.

An old carport may be structurally sound but if it is looking faded, stained, or rusty then it may be time to give it a new coat of paint.  Before you begin any carport maintenance, it is highly important to first clean the surface very well because dirt, dust, and debris could affect your carport repairs and results.  If rust is present, make sure you sand the area down as much as possible to remove the rust.  Once the rust is gone, you can begin to apply a coat of outdoor paint.  Auto paint is also good for outdoor structures because it is also intended for outdoor exposure.

Replacing all of part of the roof is also fairly simple because metal sheeting comes in pretty large sizes that you can cut down to size if needed but all you really have to do is remove the old one and replace it with a new sheet.  Adding siding is a little more difficult because you will need to add some kind of support within that can support the siding.  Wood works well but you will need to make sure the overall wall is sturdy and durable before you begin to add the siding.

You may need to hire or consult with a professional contractor if you are wondering how to fix a carport that is structurally not sound.  There are many dangers involved with fixing a carport that could topple over at any minute.  Extra supports will need to be installed before you can even enter the area.
