Carport Instructions

by Raymond Wallace

Any homeowner willing to put in a little work can install a carport with some good carport instructions.  Carports can add function and beauty to your home, providing shelter for vehicles, or just shade to keep you out of bad weather. Fortunately, there are an abundance of manufacturer’s making carports today, and many offer do-it-yourself carport kits with clear carport drawings.

Installing a carport in your home is not a difficult project at the most basic level.  Your carport planning kit should have clear carport installation instructions that come with the kit or are available on the company’s website.  Before ordering you should measure the area where the carport is going to be built. Carports can be made to fit, so you do not have to buy a standard size.  You also need to measure the vehicle or vehicles you plan on parking in the carport space.

Next, you will need to find out what the local building codes are.  Most carports do not need to pass inspection if they are a separate building, but a more complex or attached structure may have different regulations.  While you are at it, contact your insurance company. This investment may entitle you to a discounted insurance rate.

Before your carport is delivered make sure you download the carport instruction if necessary and study it.  Most kits require that you lay a solid and level foundation, preferably concrete.  The carport will be anchored to this, so it needs to be fully cured and ready to accept long anchor bolts.  Assemble all tools so that your team is ready the day it arrives.  Trusses are assembled with uprights and bottom rails.  Purloins as well as, girt will need to be attached to strengthen the structure.  Any sheet metal roofing or side walls can now be installed.  If you are using a garage door, this will be the last piece to go in.

A simple carport can have fewer steps than this, and a fully outfitted carport building much more, but be sure to follow the carport instruction carefully regardless of the size or style of structure you have chosen.
