Carport Garage Conversions – Things To Know

by Raymond Wallace

Carport garage conversions are fairly simple to do if you know what you are doing.  If you don’t, there are many things you must first consider including whether or not the existing structure is stable enough to be enclosed and if there are any local code restrictions regarding such a project.  Most areas of the country have strict building guidelines which must be followed in order for any construction project to pass the permit and building process.  Most carports and garages are treated as part of your home regardless if they are attached or standing alone on your property.  Building codes may seem a waste of time and money but most are in effect to protect your property and the well being of your family.  The last thing you want is an unstable structure on your property.  High winds or heavy snowfall can cause the structure to collapse and possibly cause injury to a loved one and in the least, damage to your valuables.

Carport, garages, and awnings usually fall into the same category when it comes to building requirements because most are intended for the storage of vehicles while also providing shelter from the elements.  A safe carport garage conversion will result in an enclosed building which will add more value to your property.  Even if you have to hire the services of a professional contractor or property inspector to make sure you are doing the right thing, it is well worth the investment.  Most contractors are quite familiar with helping homeowners with projects even simple convert carport to garage projects.

In order for a conversion to be considered an actual garage, it will need to meet certain size criteria.  A contractor or inspector will be able to tell you if your existing structure is of sufficient size or if it will need to be expanded in order to meet the minimum size requirements of a garage.  Enclosed garages, carports, and utility sheds can serve multiple functions so you may also want to consider adding electrical or plumbing fixtures in the space.  The addition of such fixtures will also increase the value of the space and easily double the function of the space.  Adding either plumbing or electrical fixtures in the space will require additional permits but again, you will have to weigh all of the options, expenses, added value, and added function in order to determine if it is money well spent.
