Carport Foundation

by Raymond Wallace

If you do not have a traditional garage and are considering getting a carport, you will need to think about the type of carport foundation you want to have. The standard type of driveway area for a residential home is a cement or blacktop driveway. If you do not currently have a garage, you may not have a paved drive to your home. Before the installation of a carport, you will need to consider whether you want to have a blacktop or cement driveway. The type of carport foundations used in the construction will also determine the type of carport anchors or carport footings that will be used.

If you choose to have a blacktop driveway installed for use with your carport you will need to use a type of anchor that will not easily pull out of the softer blacktop material. Once you decide on the type of foundation you want, you can start looking at the various types of carport framing available. You have the choice of going with an all concrete structure by using concrete or cement posts, or having a carport made of wood built. Wooden carports are easier to custom make and have more variety available in roofing styles.

Choosing the right type of foundation for your carport will ensure that your shelter will be able to stand up over time. A nice drive area is also much easier to maintain then a dirt path is. It is easier to clear of snow and debris and is also smoother to drive on. Blacktop driveways generally need to be resurfaced periodically while the cement ones are generally set for years. If you have a very large front yard area, you can also have a U-shaped drive installed with a drive-thru carport area. Whether your home is large or small, a carport can be constructed to accommodate what you need.
