Carport building is not as difficult as you once thought it might be. You can use such a shelter if you are a homeowner looking to augment your garage space or protect your car if your garage has become your workshop-storage area. You can also use a carport for commercial purposes such as for public works as a portable protective cover for work vehicles when they are on site.
Prefabricated carport kits are simple to build and install and are very portable in the event of changing conditions or if you discover a need to move it to another location. Such kits now include bolt-together assembly that needs little to no welding or heavy bracing. In addition, they are not as expensive as you once might have believed—these kits can be found for as little as $900, whether you choose a flat or a peaked roof.
Building a carport kit involves assembling and then anchoring base rails where you want the structure to sit. After that assembly and anchoring, you put the trusses together, up to six or even eight depending on the length of your structure, and attach them to the base rails. Then, you attach sheet-metal cover panels.
Which roof you choose for your carport buildings depends in large part on your weather protection requirements. If you are building in a heavy precipitation area, a peak-shaped roof should be ideal for simple snow and rain runoff, not to mention being considered highly pest and fire resistant at once.
In addition, you are not restricted to a metal roof cover. Soft-top carports keep weathering from vehicles if you plan to use the carport as a vehicle cover, but they also make ideal picnic tent areas, providing excellent shade and sun blocking.
Flat-top carport kits are still the most popular among the prefabricated kits because they are the least costly and the easiest to build, mount, and maintain. However, they are not good options in heavy precipitation areas. Among the peak-roof carport building kits, the mansard style, a slope in a single direction, provides the same runoff as a standard peak roof but is not quite as expensive.
