Carports, Tips

When a homeowner first decides to have a carport built on his property, that homeowner might fail to appreciate the need for submission of carport blueprints. A homeowner might not realize that city ordinances usually demand the submission of official notice regarding any and all carport plans.

The addition of a carport can alter the value of a home. That is the primary reason that municipalities require the submission of a carport blueprint, prior to construction of a carport. That required blueprint should be done by a professional architect. The homeowner can not have an artist complete a few carport drawings.

Neither should the homeowner assume that all carport designs are alike. Some carports hold two cars, some are meant for only one vehicle. That fact underscores the importance of providing government officials with a professional looking carport design.

After submission of the blueprints, and approval of those blueprints, then the homeowner can initiate the construction of the desired carport. The homeowner should not, however think that the city has given a go ahead to any and all actions taken by the construction crew.

The homeowner can expect to receive regular visits from the city building inspector. One of the first visits will come after the placement of the post footings. In colder climates, the inspector must make sure that those footings fall below the recognized frost line. In some localities concerns about possible earthquakes could cause the inspector to call attention to the advantages of retrofitting.

After completion of the carport, then the homeowner ought to acknowledge all of those who contributed to construction of that addition. That should include a token of thanks to the architect who supplied the carport drawing or plan. After all, a homeowner never knows when he or she might want to make other changes to the size or shape of the family’s residence.
