The reason has everything to do with durability and sturdiness because metal can be treated or galvanized to make it stronger.  Other materials like wood and vinyl cannot be made much stronger than they already are.  Depending on your budget you will be able to determine if you can afford a metal structure versus any other type.  If you have a very expensive vehicle or if budget is not an issue for you then you should definitely choose from one of the many metal carport options that are available.
