Carports, Tips

Attached carports can come in many different sizes and styles. The best carport for you depends on your own specific shelter needs. Every single type or size of shelter has its own benefits. Whether you choose a free standing or an attached carport, they all have the same beneficial purpose.

A free standing carport is a structure that stands free; the shelter is not attached to building, house or any other object. Attached means that there is one side of the shelter is attached to a building, house or any other object.  Attached carport designs are also known as lean to carports. As they are attached to an existing building, the cost of this will be slightly lower than the free standing one. Benefits of attached carport plans are that they will require less space, simply because they are attached directly adjacent to your house or building so they take up less space than free standing shelters.

Not only does a carport provide protection for your vehicle and other equipment you store underneath, it also adds value to your property. Another benefit is that an attached carport design is that it is very easy to assemble especially if you choose one that is open on the three remaining sides.  Most kits can be assembled by the average consumer with a few helping hands from friends or family. Be careful though when performing installing a structure by yourself because many of the structural pieces are quite heavy and could cause bodily injury if handled incorrectly.

Before going out and purchasing your carport, you need to measure the exact dimensions of the space you have available and of your vehicle. The standard dimension for a single carport is 11 feet by 20 feet long. If your vehicle or recreational vehicle is larger, you will probably need to special order or customize the size of the shelter so it will fit.  The  height of the shelter will also have to considered carefully because your carport cannot be taller than the building it will be installed against.

Metal attached shelters are considered the best ones on the market today. The reason has everything to do with durability and sturdiness because metal can be treated or galvanized to make it stronger.  Other materials like wood and vinyl cannot be made much stronger than they already are.  Depending on your budget you will be able to determine if you can afford a metal structure versus any other type.  If you have a very expensive vehicle or if budget is not an issue for you then you should definitely choose from one of the many metal carport options that are available.
