Carport Kits, Carports

Aluminum carports are popular choices for protecting vehicles from the elements.  They are much cheaper than wood structures and can easily match most architectural building designs.  Metal carports are usually a DIY project that adds value and convenience to your property.

There are two basic aluminum carport designs: freestanding or attached. A free standing aluminum carport often needs no special permits because it is considered an outbuilding. Check local permit laws to be sure though, each place is different. An attached aluminum carport uses a wall of a building for part of its support.  This can provide sheltered access between the building and the vehicle if positioned over an entranceway.

There are also two basic styles of roofing: trussed or covered. A trussed roof is domed and aluminum carport covers are flat but are angled to allow rain to run-off. Accessories can include fancy posts, attachable walls and rain diverters.

The main consideration when purchasing a carport is the height and width of the items being stored.  RV’s can be quite high whereas a passenger car will not require as high a covering. Carports can be wide enough for multiple vehicles.  The standard height is seven feet and a 10′ x 10′ carport cover will protect one vehicle.  Most carports come with a 15 year or 20 year warranty.

Aluminum carport kits can be purchased online and shipped to site.  It would be better to buy locally to ensure meeting load requirements for your area. Otherwise, a trip to the local planning office will provide the necessary information to make the appropriate purchase.  Most kits come with everything needed to assemble the aluminum carport cover.  To be safe though, make sure the directions are included in the kit.

Aluminum carport plans allow for more flexibility in purchasing materials.  With aluminium carport plans, the DIY person gets all the directions needed to build the carport and then has to go out and find the materials and then do all the cutting and drilling themselves.  This would be a good method for someone who has access to materials below retail prices.

Most aluminum carports are priced around $1,000. A carport can be installed in any flat location.  Most kits come with anchors, but a concrete slab can also be poured.  Obviously this will increase the cost tremendously.

Aluminum can be painted to match anything.  Be sure to use an oil based primer before applying an exterior latex paint.  The oxidizing of aluminum and the ammonia in most latex paint creates bubbles beneath the paint.  An oil based primer creates a barrier to prevent these bubbles.
